Dr. Darryl D’Lima received his medical education and orthopedic training in India and his M.S. and Ph.D. in bioengineering from UC San Diego. A physician-scientist at Scripps Health for 16 years, he directs the Orthopedic Research Laboratories at SCORE. His research involves cartilage injury; use of stem cells in treating arthritis; joint wear in hip and knee prostheses; and development of smart orthopedic implants.

His numerous honors include the Kappa Delta Award, the highest recognition in orthopedics, for his studies on cartilage injury and arthritis. Author of over 100 manuscripts and book chapters, he has received 19 academic, foundation and government grants. He recently received a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine $3.3 million grant for translational stem cell research and a National Institutes of Health grant to develop an electronic knee prosthesis.
