KL2 Clinician Scholar (STSI), Internal Medicine Research Fellow (Scripps Green Hospital)

Dr. Hardeep Phull joined the STSI in 2013 as a KL2 Clinical Scholar. He is part of the combined Internal Medicine – Physician-Scientist program at Scripps Green Hospital, in which candidates complete two years of traditional Internal Medicine training followed by a two to three year research fellowship at STSI.
Hardeep completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Arizona (UA) with a B.S. in molecular biology, conducting research on biochemical parameters of oligonucleotides used in manufacturing DNA microarrays. He culminated his undergraduate career with a challenging research fellowship abroad in Poland, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the BRAVO! program. Before applying for medical school, he further explored his research interests by working as a laboratory manager at UA Health Sciences Center in the Department of Urology, where he conducted research on novel vehicles for delivery of gene therapy and the role of Angiotensin II in the genitourinary tract. Hardeep’s post-baccalaureate experiences led him to enroll in a unique 5 year Physician-Scientist program at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (CCLCM) where he continued to pursue his interests and research in Urology while eventually realizing his passion for Medicine. His thesis evaluated rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing using electrochemical biosensors.
Dr. Phull is interested in pursuing a clinical fellowship in Hematology-Oncology and his current research endeavors involve the synthesis of bi-specific antibodies which can be targeted to deliver chemotherapeutic compounds and cytotoxic T-cells directly to cancer cells. He has published 11 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, presented several abstracts at national meetings, and has earned multiple honors including winning the national American College of Physicians (ACP) Basic Science Poster competition and the American Urological Association essay contest.
