Paul DePodesta, a renowned baseball executive who joined the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) faculty as Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics at the end of 2015, has been named Chief Strategy Officer with the Cleveland Browns.
DePodesta has been instrumental in revolutionizing baseball by applying innovative multi-layered data analysis to player evaluation and recruitment, an approach sometimes describes as ‘Moneyball’. His successes with the Oakland A’s helped inspire the book and subsequent movie of the same name.
This is DePodesta’s second recent move towards applying his skills and extensive expertise in baseball data analysis to a new, notable field. In an effort to jumpstart the ‘Moneyball’ of medicine, he recently opted to shift his attention to the field of digital medicine by joining the ranks of STSI faculty who specialize in translational research. By joining the Cleveland Browns, DePodesta will be taking on yet another industry that will no doubt benefit greatly from his data-centric approaches and strategies to make better decisions and more accurate predictions.
At STSI, DePodesta works with informatics data scientists on large medical research projects that leverage big data analytics and digital health technologies with the goal of achieving individualized health care and improving human health.
The STSI analytics team’s research projects include:
- The Molecular Autopsy Study, which searches for genes associated with sudden unexplained death by sequencing the DNA of study participants and their biological family members.
- The IDIOM Study, which uses DNA sequencing to look for the genetic causes and potential treatments of idiopathic diseases – serious and rare health conditions that defy a diagnosis and standard treatment.
