A graduate student in biological sciences at UC San Diego, Ryan Tewhey investigates the genomics of MRSA with STSI/SGM’s Nicholas J. Schork, Ph.D., as his mentor. After receiving the B.S. degree in both molecular and cellular biology & biochemistry at the University of Maine, Ryan was a research technician at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass. For three summer months in 2010, Ryan conducted research at the Genome Institute of Singapore where he assisted in genome assembly and analysis of Burkholderia thailandensis strains as part of the NSF’s East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute program. His interests include the leveraging of high throughput sequencing technologies for both human and bacterial resequencing projects and the population genetics of infectious diseases.
