Supervisor, CTSA Community Engagement
Monica Ruiz, M.A., who is based at the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, directs and coordinates activities that involve community-based organizations in translational research directed at reducing type 2 diabetes and its complications among specific high-risk populations in the San Diego area. The translational research initiatives include the Scripps-San Diego Genebank and a pilot program to prevent gestational diabetes. Monica and her colleagues interact frequently with community members and organizations to inform them about the research and enlist their participation. She oversees a comprehensive, culturally appropriate diabetes management program that reaches diverse patient populations throughout the county. Before joining Scripps in 2009, Monica was Research Feasibility Study Coordinator at the University of San Diego’s Institute for Nonprofit Research. Monica was awarded the M.A. in nonprofit leadership and management by University of San Diego.
