Athena Philis-Tsimikas, M.D., who is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the subspecialty of Diabetes and Endocrinology, has dedicated her career to advancing diabetes care, research and education. The Chief Medical Officer & Corporate Vice President of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute (SWDI) at Scripps Health, she has served as the principal investigator of numerous clinical research trials, both sponsor and investigator-initiated. Among her accomplishments is the nationally-recognized community-wide diabetes care program, Project Dulce. Prior to joining the SWDI, Athena was a clinical endocrinologist at the Scripps Clinic in the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology. She currently serves as an Associate Clinical Professor at UC San Diego in the Division of Endocrinology/Diabetes and Metabolism. After receiving the M.D. degree in 1988 at the University of Athens Medical School in Greece, she completed dual research and clinical fellowships in Diabetes and Endocrinology at UC San Diego and Scripps Clinic.
