Monumental efforts in the last several years promise to bridge this valley and build a more effective way of translating discoveries to treatments. They’re part of a field called translational science or translational medicine. The goal is to improve the links in the chain of discovery to therapies. There are some successes, but the main job of reinventing how medical science works lies ahead.
