Whittier Institute

Whittier InstituteFounded in 1982, The Whittier Institute for Diabetes stands alone as the San Diego regions leading comprehensive organization for diabetes. In a struggle to overcome this epidemic facing 18 million Americans, few institutions have risen above all others in their total dedication. The Whittier is wholly committed to diabetes patient care, education and research.

The Whittier accomplishes its mission by collaborating with other institutions, their researchers, and physicians - such as Scripps Health; University of California, San Diego; Childrens Hospital, San Diego; San Diego Community Clinics; and The Scripps Research Institute.

Mater Dei Catholic High School Science Academy

Mater Dei Catholic High SchoolIn the 2007/8 school year, Mater Dei Science Academy students will engage in science through collaborations and partnerships within the Southern California scientific community. In an effort to give other at-risk, local students (non-Mater Dei student body) the same High School Head Start, the Mater Dei Science Academy has extended an invitation to the Barrio Logan College Institute science students to join the program. Located in the heart of Barrio Logan, the Institute promotes the pursuit of higher education for students who are under-represented in college through after school programs that begin in the third grade. They work primarily with local Latino students who will be the first in their families to go college.

In its pilot study year, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute, including Dr. Jeffery Kelly, Dean of the TSRI Kellogg School of Graduate Studies, and Dr. Katja Van Herle, TSRI CORE Director, are guiding the student mentorship program, with activities that include:

  • Scientists meeting with Science Academy students on site at Mater Dei on the topic of school-to-career opportunities in the fields of research science and medicine.
  • Students participating in site visits to TSRI laboratories for research observation.
  • Students interfacing with and being mentored by TSRI graduate students.
  • Students recording their program participation in journals as a means of student record keeping throughout the school year.

During their year of inquiry, the students’ challenge is to model scientists’ methodologies and inquiry, and to communicate their new knowledge to their peers and the public. A Science Fair will be the culmination of the 2007/8 Science Academy year. Students will share their year of science inquiry, either by traditional means of a poster session, hands-on demonstrations, or at a film festival for peer review.

SDSU Institute for Public Health

SDSU Institute for Public HealthThe Institute for Public Health (IPH) serves as a bridge between the public health academic community and public health practice. It supports the development of mutually beneficial partnerships between the San Diego State University (SDSU) Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), local public health agencies, and private organizations. Our academic-practice partnerships are regional, California statewide and along the international border. These partnerships are intended to expand the base of knowledge for all individuals working in public health, and are facilitated through student field placements, internships, scholarships, collaborative faculty-practitioner research, program evaluation, technical assistance, continuing education, professional development, agency capacity building, and dissemination of health data and information.
